Governor Corzine gives the green light for Genital Waxing!

April 14, 2008, the NJ Board of Cosmetology held their monthly meeting on Halsey St in Newark, NJ. The first topic at hand- "Brazilian Waxing". The NJ State board decided to use the term Genital Waxing since Brazilian Waxing varies from Salon to Salon and can leave gaps as to areas which need to be included in the rules and regulations.

Rosemary Weiner, Chair of the ASSP was able to speak on behalf of Salons and Spas and presented the board with a formal presentation copy and spoke about the ASSP position in regards to the definitions, protocols and procedure for the Brazilian Waxing. Ms. Weiner stated that the procedure and protocols were the same for waxing anywhere else on the body. The Board thanked her and move onto to other issues at hand.

Sharon Joyce, Assistant Attorney General explained that the new rules and regulations would come out end of May and the statute where the prohibition of Genital Waxing would be on Reserve. So this section is on hold until the NJ Board set ups a committee that will decide of the protocols, safety and language that should be revised to include genital waxing.

Concerns of liability issues with insurance companies came up but as informed by Mr. Jay Malanga at the meeting, we could use the letter posted on line by the Division of Consumer affairs to offer the service. We left the meeting feeling good but still unsure if we could wax again safely.

Then there it was sitting on my kitchen counter, a letter, a letter coming from the Attorney General's office addressed to me Ms. Feuza Reis. That letter was written on behalf of Governor Corzine in reply to our letter of complaint of loss of revenue and of our grass roots campaign where we had been petitioning since last month when the Brazilian Waxing Ban was voted to be included in the rules and regulations. The one line that we proudly celebrates was the following:

This means that while the NJ Board investigates the issue and works on the regulations which can be a long process, we are allowed to offer Brazilian Waxing and we can place our BRAZILIAN WAX sign back! More info to come.
